Lain's Log

Movin' on up?

March 19/12.

Had quite an afternoon. Got together with an old friend I haven't seen in about 30 years!

Terry Scott is Director of Broadcasting for The Canadian Press.

He's worked there 22 years. Before that, his unbelievably deep, booming voice and excellent news writing skills netted him radio jobs in newsrooms all over the place, including Montreal, Toronto and London (Ontario).

We first met at CFTR radio in 1978. I was the City Hall reporter, moonlighting as the entertainment reporter (which was what I REALLY wanted to do), but most of the time I was stuck covering scintillating city council meetings, (some of them action-packed, others that put journos right to sleep), tedious TTC boardroom debates and loud protests out on Nathan Phillips Square.

I invited Terry to lunch (we went to The Hot House Cafe), so I could pick his brain about some ideas I have for going back to work in the media biz. He surprised me by bringing along a couple of old photos.

Strangely, I have copies of these pics in an album, but didn't remember he was the photographer! I was 23 at the time. As I recall, the joke I was trying to create for Terry was, - hard-working, quiet, subdued, mild, meek & mousey news writer/reporter by day,

wild, vampy, vixenish party girl by night! Ha ha! Tossed the glasses, tore off the conservative confining jacket, tousled the hair and look out world! (love the old radio carts in the background). Terry and I reminisced about those fabulous fun days in the 'TR newsroom when we worked around the clock and couldn't get enough of covering the news. It sure gets in your blood. We both agreed the dedicated & diehard young roster of reporters and newscasters back then was top-notch and we remember all of our colleagues there very fondly. Funny pics Terr.

Terry gave me a tour of the CP newsroom (which is NOTHING like the dingy & dishevelled little newsroom we shared at 'TR!)

This, despite the fact the CP newsroom is in slight disarray as the organization is currently in the midst of a huge shuffle, consolidating operations from four floors down to just two! (you can see some of the packed boxes piled up and scattered around the place).

After our lunch, Terry was planning on packing up his own office to move to different digs. I'm surprised he was able to fit me into his busy schedule, but he gave me plenty of time and was most helpful and encouraging. Thank you so much Terry. Now I just have to try and make things happen!

On the way back from the restaurant, I couldn't help but stop by the old CFTR building, just around the corner from CP. I always thought it was cool there were two different entrances - one at 25 Adelaide Street East,

and the other at 44 Victoria Street.

CFTR was on the 11th floor and CHFI (sister station), on the 12th. At one point, I ended up working at both stations at the same time, doing newscasting. On weekends, I often had the 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift, racing from one floor to the other, writing and reading one newscast on the hour at 'FI and the next, on the half hour at 'TR! Sure kept me hopping, and by the time the shift wrapped up, I was ready to collapse. Even so, I'd still stay on to rip wires, (nobody even knows what ripping wires MEANS anymore!), answer phones and help out the next newscaster for a while, just to wind down and catch my breath!

After the stroll down memory lane, I wandered over to Yonge Street. What incredible weather! Just fantastic.

At the busy corner of Yonge & Dundas, a crowd had gathered, so I crossed the street to see what all the commotion was about.

Turned out, it was the ever-popular "Fire Man" (as he bills himself). I've seen him several times at Dundas Square.

He really fans the flames for his fans who always seem quite taken with him, (especially when he tells them not to applaud, but to yell out, "OHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHH!" - and then to give him money).

While walking to the Eaton Centre,

I saw this billboard in a window and wished I could master what this woman is doing! Ouch. I've been working on a lot of exercises lately, but I can't do THIS!

Instead, I hit up Forever 21 (hey Terry, - guess seeing you made me remember those good old days in my 20s!), and if you can believe it,

I bought a pair of these lacy, ruffly aqua short shorts! They're the cutest shorts I've ever seen! Ahhhh, but will I have the nerve to WEAR them out in hot weather? (Well, if you ever read this blog, you likely already know the answer will be YES!)

Then over to The Body Shop for some more vanilla scented body cream. (what else?). The "buy two, get a third one free" deal is still on. I met a beautiful and lovely young sales woman there named Fay Ann. She told me about a different vanilla product,

a spray cologne, and spritzed my wrist with it. The scent is fabulous. I HAD to have it Oh no! Not ANOTHER vanilla addiction!

While walking back to my car, fire guy was still burning up the street and I had a flaming desire to go home and send my resume to Terry. It's a start. Much more to come.

If you've gotta work somewhere, it might as well be Toronto!

What's not to like?

Right Terry?
I came home on a big high for the first time in several weeks, looking forward to what might lie ahead. I DO know what I'm up to on Tuesday. Back to Princess Margaret at 10:45 a.m. to meet with "The Nutty Professor" (my medical oncologist). Hopefully, he'll tell me all is well and to keep making plans! You BET I will Doc!

Ultra-high maintenance!

October 21/11.

I've been a high maintenance woman since the age of 13 when I first discovered makeup. There was no turning back. It started off innocently enough when the braces came off and I traded in my horrifying pointy-edged glasses for blue-tinted contact lenses, then turned to just a touch of Erace concealer to hide the dark circles. In no time flat, I was hitting the hard stuff. Makeup became my drug of choice and I was full-out addicted. Like any drug, I liked the way it made me feel. And look.

Decades later, makeup is still my heavy duty addiction. I wasn't blessed with Angelina Jolie looks, so I do the most I can with what I've got and have a helluva lot of fun with it! The natural look? Not for me. Never was. My husband, Sam, has often asked, when I will let the natural hair colour grow out and stop with the glam? Are you freaking kidding me?? Answer? Not in this lifetime! (on this, the eve of our wedding anniversary, it's hard to believe he has witnessed the "makeup transformation" pretty much every day for 28 years, and hasn't jumped ship yet. Ai carumba!)

I have a close friend, (who shall remain nameless, at her request). We constantly joke about our mutual passionate love affair with makeup. She has been known to throw me into hysterical laughter by referring to my makeup headquarters (the floor of my bedroom), as "The War Room." (appropriate, because it's a major battle, every day to go from blank canvas to "masterpiece"! - and believe me, masterpiece is ever-elusive, but I keep trying!)

For fun, thought I'd show the products it takes to pull a rabbit out of a hat every day. (or, as my late Mum always used to say, "Miracle time!!" - We shared a wild love for makeup). I won't go as far as to show before-and-after shots, (though I've been known to DO that in the past), but I don't want to lose readers here!! People would be running for the hills!

Tons 'o makeup!

Makeup never STARTS with makeup. It begins with a shower, to get that blank canvas look. Here are the "few products" I enjoy using to reach that stage!

(left to right), Scope white mouthwash, Exact liquid white soap, Johnson's baby oil (to remove waterproof mascara), Oil of Olay vanilla bodywash (the scent is simply fantastic), Pantene frizzy to smooth shampoo & conditioner, Finesse hairspray, St. Ives facial scrub, Bodycology brown sugar vanilla body mist (can't get enough!), Skintimate raspberry shaving gel, Quattro raspberry razor, Bath Retreat vanilla body butter, Secret deoderant, Johnson's baby powder, Arm & Hammer whitening toothpaste, Oral B toothbrush, contact lens disinfectant, blowdryer, (don't leave home without it!), saline solution, Oil of Olay moisturizer (best product EVER!), Ponds moisturizer (for under eye). - That's ALL it takes!

After THAT, comes makeup!!

(left to right) - Cover Girl Advanced Radiance Age Defying base foundation in Buff Beige (terrific product); RCMA CS-1 concealer, (better known by me as "Industrial strength bag cream" - best stuff ever! - only available at Hiscott's); plus concealer brush to apply (Lauren Hutton's Good Stuff collection); Cover Girl Ultimate Finish Liquid Powder Makeup 420- Creamy Natural; Ben Nye pressed eye shadow ES-56 Espresso (also only at Hiscott's); Annabelle under eye Kohl eyeliner - Black, 73 (GREATEST Kohl liner on the planet); eyebrow brush applicator (Annabelle A-14); eyebrow brush (Clinique - Brow keeper liner, warm brown, 01); Coty Airspun loose face powder translucent extra coverage 070-41 (have to order it from eBay in the U.S. - worth it!); Lauren Hutton's Good Stuff blush brush; Visine, (gotta get the red out!); Mac mineralized blush - Dainty; lipstick, Rimmel Lasting Finish, 010 - Dizzy; lipstick, Rimmel, Moisture Renew, 260, Amethyst Shimmer; Gosh On Stage Cool Lip Jam gloss, 104; Cover Girl eye enhancers eye shadow, Brown Smolder, 740 (fab colour!); Cover Girl loose powder puff, (a must!); Revlon eyelash curler (can't live without it!); Maybelline Lash Stylist waterproof mascara, Very Black (no longer made, naturally. Sam located a dozen of them on eBay. Worth every penny); Mac Blacktrack fluid line gel eyeliner (great product!); eyeliner brush (bought from art supply store for $2.00) Dynasty, 352R - Made in Thailand; eyeliner brush (also from art supply store), Dynasty, 331R - Made in Thailand. (So, as you see, NO big deal to achieve that "natural" look!)

On top of the above, can't forget
Velcro rollers, clips, round hairbrush. I keep hoping for a good hair day.

And of course, L'Oreal Superior Preference Hair Colour - #38!
It's terrific!

Check out lots of old Global TV pics (below), wearing SO much makeup it's insane! (LOVE it!) For 18 years, I had professional makeup artists to help me. Tried to learn from them, but could never quite achieve the same results they did. (Dana Joon, best in the biz, where are you when I need you)?

1.) At Talo hair salon when I changed my colour to strawberry blonde, and got a new cut. Wish it could look this way again!
2.) With the late, great John Candy in the Global green room after our interview.

3.) Co-hosting the Variety Club Telethon. (I can see sports anchor Bill Bird on the phones in the background).
4.) Dressed up in blue to cover an awards show. Forget which one.
5.) With actor Roger Moore. - Took years to finally score an interview with him!

6.) Anchoring an entertainment segment on the Global news set.
7.) My fave hair and makeup ever, in the Global makeup room. (with my idol, Marilyn Monroe behind me). Dana did my makeup here to cover the Junos one year.

Who knows? Maybe the products I use, will inspire others to get creative! - (or go crazy). In turn, if anyone has products to recommend, would be happy to hear about them! I keep the cosmetics industry in biz!

Justification

August 10/11.

Sometimes it's tough to justify taking a "day off." (I know, - EVERYONE can relate to this statement, right?? - No one, even Donald Trump, is free of restrictions/obligations/responsibilites)! - Like, dragging out PILES of garbage, which I did at 8 a.m.

"LAIN!! I DEMAND that you take a day OFFFFFFF!"

But I'm not talking about Donald Trump, or anybody else. Only me! Seems, for so long, I've been living by schedules, appointments, doing what HAD TO BE done. - How about what I WANT to do?? (whatever THAT is!!)

So, today was the day.

Relax, try to take care of my burn, go for a ride in my new Subaru, visit a friend, check out my Princess Margaret Hospital t-shirt, (which I haven't worn yet!), but LOVE!! -

Read an inspiring story in a book I bought at the Princess Margaret Hospital gift shop, a few weeks ago, - (for $3.98!!)

Watch a DVD episode of House, (Season 3), bought for me by my kids,

(bring it ON Hugh Laurie!!)

Look at the new pocketbook I picked up to take to Fern Resort next week,

(don't even know WHY I chose it, - just looked interesting from the description),

And then, later, when I got home,

Got a special gift from my husband, Sam! A GPS navigator for my new car!!

AWESOME!! Could it BE, that I won't get lost anymore! (doubt it, but you're welcome to TRY GPS woman!!)

And, in between, on this "day off," - finished laundry, put away dishes from the dishwasher, shopped, did banking, made dinner (only for me, since everybody else went out!!), made up beds, fed the cat, changed the litter box, (delightful task), and yep, had a vanilla shower.

Can't really think of ANY reason I should be justified to take a day for myself, but did it anyway!! Life is too SHORT!!! - and ONE OF THESE days, don't want it to be all over before it's too late!!!!
Cheers!!

An eclectic array

August 7/11.

Had a really good day today. Feeling happy. Feeling great. Did what I WANTED to do - (which was next-to-nothing). Energized one moment, zonked out the next. (sounds like Sinatra in That's Life...."I've been up and down and over and out"),....and on and on...

"You're riding high in April, shot down in May". Sinatra always sang about real life. Regrets? - Love, - doo-be-doo-be-doo, and everything else in between.

Yesterday, trying to clean things up in the basement - had all kinds of stuff out on the back deck to be taken away - (soon), by a junkyard dog. I was actually "taking phone calls" outside - in the wardrobe behind me, because people kept calling while I was working!! Had to go sit INSIDE the wardrobe because it was pouring rain! Never a dull moment.

As for Sunday, off to Canadian Tire.

Haven't been there in a while. LOVE that store! Just wanted to check out the deals and see what I might want/need/crave.

Ended up buying only a greeting card, (for my nephew, Lee, as we are WAYYYYYYYYYY overdue for his belated 16th birthday gift, which got held up due to Mum's house sale). - Don't worry Lee! Your gift is coming and we hope you will spend it on ANYTHING you like! All the best for year 16!! Also bought some packs of Reese's peanut butter cups for the kids.

If you want to see a HUGE part of my life, - this is it! (below)

Max, (in front), Robyn, Kate, Damian, billions of DVDs, M*A*S*H*, food, fun, all packed tightly into a tiny little den. LOVE this little room. Love these kids.

Sam grilled chicken souvlaki on the barbeque, I made salad and prepared strawberries for dessert, with vanilla icecream. All delicious! Taste of the Danforth was happening just six blocks away, but we didn't go, and decided to have our own Greek dinner at home. Don't want summer to end.
